about TEACH ted

Familiarity is the antidote to fear

Imagine a world where every parent knows the best possible way to prepare their child for their own or a loved one’s challenging medical experiences, no matter where they live or who they are being treated by.

Hi, we’re Sare and Sarah and we created Teach Ted to make this imaginary world a reality!

Teach Ted helps families to:

Social stories are a key element in learning through play. They can help children understand what might happen and why, so they can face new challenges with reduced anxiety and have all those unspoken questions answered.

As parents ourselves, we know that when it comes to the medical experiences our kids face, sometimes we just don’t know where to start. With many medical experiences, you may not have been through it yourself or it was so long ago, you don’t remember the details.

So we share stories and resources to guide you and your child through all sorts of events like:

  • Going to hospital for an operation or emergency room

  • Trips to the dentist

  • Getting a blood test

  • Having a sick loved one

  • Supporting a family member with dementia

And so much more!

If you’ve got something you’d like some help with, let us know by suggesting a blog topic.

How do we do it

Our approach is founded in research and early childhood best practice.

Learning through play is a fundamental principle of our early education system as well as many therapies to support children facing trauma or with extra learning challenges. We don’t need to tell you this though - you see it every day as your child grows and learns about new things.

We leverage our own professional and lived experiences and collaborate with early childhood and medical play experts so you can be confident that what we share can actually help your child to thrive.

Help us help others

Every time you buy one of our books, videos or activities or click on an affiliate link in our blog posts, you are helping families in need.

Your support allows us to continue to research and create new blog posts and resources as well as build awareness of how to access them.

Each year we also donate books and other resources to groups supporting families facing medical challenges.

If you would like to put forward a group to be considered in our next donation period, let us know a bit more about them. We are particularly keen to hear about rural and regional programs as we know families in those areas often have less access to paediatric-specific care and resources.

Business partnership program

Did you know we also work with businesses? If you or a business you know offers medical care, we’d love to hear from you.

Here are some of the ways we can work together:

  • Fundraising through book sales - Kindy and daycare families love Ted! You can earn money for your playgroup, daycare or school by partnering with us on a book drive. We offer a generous share of revenue, an easy-to-follow process and templates to get your message out and we take care of all the payments for you.

  • Corporate sponsorship - Gift books, training and resource packs to a charity in your name. Our approach ensures you are paired with a charity that aligns with your values and market. We also help you to share the story with your staff and community, raising the profile of both the charity and your business.

  • Training and consulting - Would you like your team to learn more about how to better support your paediatric patients? Or maybe you want to update your marketing and educational material so that they are easier for families to use and understand.

  • Patient support packs - Research has shown that when families use our resources before treatment, it isn’t just their experience that improves. Treatment time and compliance also improves, saving you time and money. We have both hard copy and digital onboarding packs or can tailor to your specific needs.
